Kakata, Smell-No-Taste to Receive Michelle Obama

first_imgThe bustling city of Kakata and the much less animated Unification Town (commonly known as Smell-No-Taste), both in Margibi County, will today be honored with a visit from U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama, her daughters Malia and Sashsa, and their delegation. As part of their three-nation tour to promote girls’ education the American first lady will meet with President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and have a discussion with local teenage girls, moderated by actress Freida Pinto. The recent Ebola outbreak in Liberia created even more challenges for girls’ education in the country, where just one-third of girls are enrolled in secondary education. Liberia ranked second only to South Sudan in the share of primary school-age girls who aren’t enrolled in school, a global report by UNESCO said earlier this year, the Associated Press reported. As part of Let Girls Learn, the First Lady – joined by Malia and Sasha Obama and Mrs. Marian Robinson – will visit a Peace Corps Training Facility in Kakata, Margibi County where she will meet with girls and young women participating in a GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) Camp. Her visit will highlight both the Peace Corps’ work to help girls in underserved communities build self-confidence, communication, and other leadership skills and new programming from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) aimed at improving access to quality education and life skills for adolescent girls across Liberia. Mrs. Obama will also visit a school in Unification Town (Smell-No-Taste) for a discussion with adolescent girls who have faced serious obstacles in attaining an education. This discussion will be moderated by actress Freida Pinto, an advocate for girls’ education. The conversation will highlight both the educational barriers girls face as Liberia moves beyond the Ebola epidemic, and the U.S. Government’s efforts to continue to address those barriers and provide adolescent girls with equitable access to safe and quality education. Meanwhile Mrs. Obama has launched Snapchat Account ahead of trip to the three countries, to encourage students in the United States to follow her trip.To give young people everywhere a fun way to follow her trip, learn about the more than 62 million girls around the world who aren’t in school, and take action to support them, are some of the reasons Mrs. Obama launched the Snapchat Account: MichelleObama. Mrs. Obama’s Snapchat profile will feature behind-the-scenes Snaps from Washington and abroad, including her upcoming trip and events in the coming months).Onward to Morocco, Mrs. Obama will be joined by Meryl Streep, also an advocate for girls’ education, and Freida Pinto who will participate in a conversation with adolescent girls, moderated by CNN’s Isha Sesay. In the discussion, participants will discuss the challenges many girls in the region face in getting a quality education. The First Lady’s visit will also highlight commitments made by the U.S. Government through the Millennium Challenge Corporation and USAID in partnership with the Kingdom of Morocco to help adolescent girls in Morocco go to school and stay in school. The First Lady will be in Morocco on June 28 and 29. During their last stop, Madrid, Spain the First Lady will on June 30 deliver a speech on Let Girls Learn to girls and young women, sharing the stories of girls she has met in Liberia and Morocco – and her prior travels – and highlighting new commitments to support Let Girls Learn. Mrs. Obama will encourage the audience to value their own educational opportunities, continue to strive for progress for girls and young women in their country, and take action to help the more than 62 million girls around the world who are out of school. While in Spain, the First Lady will also meet with Queen Letizia.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Antiguan film to be screened in Guyana

first_imgOne year after a full length movie has been produced in Antigua, the filmmaker has turned his attention to Guyana, with the hope of promoting his creation, “Cry Cry”, at various forums throughout the country. The film’s director, New York-based Antiguan medical doctor Noel Howell, has arrived in Guyana carrying his most recent production, set to be screened at high schools and other institutions within the coming weeks.Dr Howell returns to his homeland on a yearly basis, to exercise his love for the arts by hosting seminars to facilitate the creation of short films through the Antiguan Film Academy.Antiguan Filmmaker, Dr Noel HowellIn 2016, his team went above and beyond its annual creations by producing this full length feature film, “Cry Cry”. Reportedly written by 10-year-old Destiny Simon, and directed by Dr Noel Howell, “Cry Cry” features Guyanese actress Vanessa Howell alongside a number of actors hailing from the Antiguan Film Academy. According to the trailer, “It is all about politics, education, the law, and what happens when you follow the wrong company…”During an interview following his arrival in Guyana, Dr Howell explained the basis of the movie, highlighting xenophobia as the main underlying theme. He outlined, “Whenever we migrate, we get blamed for everything that goes wrong in the community. So, in this particular story, we are following some characters who migrated to Antigua, and the stereotype that they have to deal with.”This producer has posited that this theme is particularly relevant, given the many talks about immigration, especially on the American news wave. However, Dr Howell has noted that prejudice against immigrants exists even in the Caribbean, and “Cry Cry” seeks to address the discrimination directed at foreigners within the region. He has also made public his intention to impact Guyanese audiences through the screening of this movie. He has said: “Guyanese, especially the young people, will benefit a lot from this movie.” Moreover, Dr Howell pointed out that in addition to inspiring young Guyanese to pursue the arts, the screening of ‘Cry Cry’ throughout the country will make way for similar projects to be executed in Guyana.Accordingly, this Antiguan film is set to be shown at a number of high schools across Guyana, targeting the youth, while special screenings will be hosted for the general public. Screening of this Caribbean production in Guyana is as a result of a partnership between the Antiguan Film Academy and the Ministry of Education.last_img read more

Unstoppable Juve on verge of 31st Scudetto

first_img0Shares0000MILAN, April 24- Unstoppable Juventus will hope to follow up qualifying for the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in over a decade by clinching a 31st Serie A title on Sunday. With a 15-point lead on Lazio and Roma and seven games remaining, Juventus already have one hand on what will be their fourth consecutive scudetto. But they can make the Italian league title mathematically safe if they beat Torino away in the city derby and both Lazio and Roma lose their games, at home to Chievo and away to Inter Milan respectively. That would leave Juventus 18 points clear of the pack with six games remaining but the Turin giants could not be caught by Lazio and Roma because they hold the head-to-head tiebreaker on both capital sides.Juventus on Thursday were still coming down from the high of reaching the last four of the Champions League for the first time since they went all the way to the 2003 final before losing to AC Milan in a penalty shoot-out.But Chilean attacking midfielder Arturo Vidal was quick to remind his fellow teammates there is a title to be won, too.“We’ll start thinking about the derby tonight. We have a scudetto to win,” Vidal said after Juventus held Monaco to a scoreless draw in their quarter-final second leg to advance 1-0 on aggregate.Juventus make the short trip to Torino’s Stadio Olimpico for the ‘Derby della Mole’ — named after one of Turin’s major landmarks — as firm favourites having not lost to their city rivals since 1995.But that hasn’t stopped former Bianconeri striker Fabio Quagliarellia, who joined Torino last season after failing to nail down a regular starting place under former Juve coach Antonio Conte, from dreaming of causing an upset.“I hope it’s me who scores the winning goal on Sunday,” said Quagliarella, who has scored an impressive 12 goals this season for the Granata.– Neck and neck –Securing the title is only a matter of time for Juventus, but the fight for European places continues in earnest.Lazio and Roma are neck and neck for the league’s second automatic Champions League qualifying spot and the pressure this weekend is on the latter.Inter host Roma for the 100th time in all competitions and, although Roma have won the past three fixtures in Milan, Rudi Garcia’s men may not be quite so confident this time.Roma are struggling to emerge from a recent slump and Inter, who dominated city rivals AC Milan in a scoreless draw last week, are battling to stay in contention for next season’s Europa League.Garcia welcomes Gervinho back to the squad after a three-game absence although expecting goals from the Ivorian striker, who has not scored in the league since November, could be a long shot.Either way, Garcia expects a much-improved performance from his side following their second consecutive draw, against Atalanta, last week which left him fuming.“Sometimes you suffer defeats that leave you disappointed, but this draw was worrying. The extent to which we were negative stunned me,” said Garcia.Things are looking far brighter in the light blue half of Rome, with Lazio — who saw an impressive streak of wins stopped at eight in a 2-0 defeat to Juventus last time out — hosting struggling Chievo.Lazio are still without Dutch defender Stefan De Vrij, one of their pillars of this season, and lost Argentina international Lucas Biglia to an ankle sprain that will keep him out for several weeks. But before their reverse at Juventus, Lazio hit nine goals in three games. In that time, Chievo scored just twice on their way to a win, a draw and a defeat.Napoli, in fourth, host Sampdoria in Sunday’s late game looking for a win that would keep their Champions League hopes alive. However that fixture will have a particular flavour, with Sampdoria coach Sinisa Mihajlovic reported to have met Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis to discuss replacing Rafael Benitez next season.Fixtures (kick-offs GMT)SaturdayUdinese v AC Milan (1600), Inter v Roma (1845)SundayAtalanta v Empoli (1030), Genoa v Cesena, Verona v Sassuolo, Lazio v Chievo, Parma v Palermo, Torino v Juventus (all 1300), Fiorentina v Cagliari (1600), Napoli v Sampdoria (1845)0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

Latina flair in store for Kohl’s

first_imgMILWAUKEE – Retailer Kohl’s Corp. is teaming up with a top Spanish-language television star, hoping her lively home decor line will bring in Hispanic customers and appeal to all shoppers. Bedding ensembles and towels created by talk show diva Cristina Saralegui will be available in limited release at about 220 stores and online next month, the company planned to announce today. Many of the stores are in areas with significant Latino populations such as the Southwest, said Kevin Mansell, president of the Menomonee Falls, Wis.-based retailer. A nationwide launch is planned for March with a fuller line of products, including table linens, he said. Saralegui’s “The Cristina Show” on Univision is considered one of the top U.S.-produced programs on Spanish-language television. Now in its 17th season, the show has an estimated worldwide audience of 100 million. Saralegui, 58, said she looks forward to expanding her offerings and reaching a wider audience. She currently sells furniture through Pulaski Furniture and home furnishings at other retailers throughout the country. “I think that certainly a lot of Latinos are going to come in, but I think it’s going to be a surprise for everybody else,” she said. Kohl’s hopes Saralegui’s designs bring in more Hispanic customers but resonate with all shoppers, Mansell said. That’s what happened with Hispanic television personality Daisy Fuentes, whose 4-year-old line of clothing, jewelry, handbags and footwear is one of the fastest growing brands at the company, Mansell said. Saralegui said her first four bedding ensembles range from a black and white set to a Spanish-inspired one the color of red wine. She said she hopes to expand into other categories, such as pillows, rugs and flatware, in the future. “It’s really based on our lifestyle, all the things that it means to be Spanish or to be Hispanic, and they’re all thrown in together and it sort of works,” Saralegui said. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Impressive growth at South Africa’s Ngqura Port

first_imgNgqura was originally intended as a deep-water bulk port to handle manganese and other ore exports, but the focus has shifted to container-handling. A container terminal has now been added for that purpose. The mandate of the original Port Elizabeth harbour still revolves around manganese and other bulk ore.Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) chief executive Tao Morwe shared the organisation’s vision with the Port Elizabeth business community at a business networking session earlier in September 2011. He said the country has the opportunity to develop a strong maritime industry.“We want to create a port authority which is recognised for the primary role it can play in bringing about positive economic development,” Morwe said. TPT handles all terminal operations at South African ports. In the 2009/10 financial year the new 18m-deep port received 85 vessels, which increased to 358 in 2010/11.“The container terminal has a capacity of 65 to 80 tons and is looking at doing 25 to 30 container moves per hour,” said Captain Neil Chetty, acting port manager and harbour master.“The future of this port lies in it becoming a transhipment hub,” he added. However, manganese ore exports may still be transferred from the Port Elizabeth harbour to Ngqura in the future.Supporting infrastructureDredging of the basin has been completed, enabling two 300m ships to berth at the same time.Nearby rail and road transport infrastructure has also been completed, including links to the port, to the 12 000ha Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ), to the existing Port Elizabeth-Gauteng main railway line, as well as to the existing N2 highway.Future developments include the possibility of moving the bulk liquid terminal from the Port Elizabeth harbour to Ngqura and talks are under way with the preferred bidder. The bulk liquid terminal in Port Elizabeth will be closed in 2014.Chetty said that the intention is to develop the port further up the Coega River Valley and southwest along the coast. On completion, the port will have a total of 32 berths. Also on the cards is the Kalagadi Manganese Smelter earmarked for zone six at the Coega IDZ and the environmental impact assessment has begun. The smelter will have a capacity of 320 000 tons of high carbon ferromanganese per year.Complementary role“The Port Elizabeth port is strategically well positioned to the deep water Port of Ngqura and will play its part as a gentle cargo port,” said port manager Rajesh Dana.It will continue to deal in moving cargo such as motor cars and related automobile components as well as fresh produce. The port continues to be regarded as the “Detroit of Africa” with its 5 000 parking bay capacity and 159 units per hour being handled. Through its bulk terminal, the harbour moved 4.2-million tons of manganese ore in 2010.“Port Elizabeth has a vessel turnaround time of just 26 hours,” added Dana.Although the Port Elizabeth harbour is South Africa’s fifth largest port in terms of tonnage handled, it has seen a reduction in container movement since the establishment of Ngqura. This was exacerbated by the international economic crisis. But Dana feels the port will play a complementary role to Ngqura in the future. With a growing fishing industry in the area, the Port Elizabeth port will revitalise the 40 ton slipway and improve general road and rail infrastructure.Dana said tourism will also play a more important role in the port’s future identity, with the possibility of increased cruise-ship berthing and the development of the Port Elizabeth waterfront.last_img read more

SA aims for more college students

first_img13 January 2012 The Department of Higher Education and Training plans to raise the number of student enrolments at South Africa’s colleges and other post-school institutions to 4-million by 2030, Minister Blade Nzimande announced in Pretoria on Thursday. The move forms part of the proposals in the Green Paper on Post-School Education and Training, launched by Nzimande on Thursday. The Green Paper aims to revitalise the higher education system in the country and align it with South Africa’s overall development agenda.3-million ‘blocked from participating’ “We aim for 4 000 000 enrolments (approximately a 60% participation rate) in colleges or other post-school institutions (both full-time and part-time), an approximately six-fold increase over the numbers in 2011,” Nzimande said. Nzimande said that approximately 3-million young South Africans between 18 and 24 were not accommodated in either the education and training system or the labour market. This, he said, prevented many of them from participating in shaping a democratic South Africa as informed citizens. The minister said that by 2030 this should change, with South Africa having a post-school system that provided a range of accessible alternatives for young people.Community Education and Training Centres The post-school institutions will include a new institutional type – Community Education and Training Centres – to address the needs of out-of-school youth and adults. “We propose to absorb and transform the existing public adult learning centres into this category of institution, and believe that they will serve to strengthen significantly the provision of education and training to adults,” Nzimande said.
